Sparkles

Once upon a time, in a field not too far away, there lived a tiny fairy named Sparkles.  She was only 5 inches tall with long, golden, curly hair and she had wings like those of a dragonfly.  Her dress was bright yellow with neon-green diamonds sprinkled over it – and at night she glowed like a star.  Now Sparkles may have been small in size but she was very big at heart often helping those who needed it by granting them gifts.

Two days ago she met up with a boy named Ron who loved to fish. His fishing line had gotten so tangled up into knots and he was so frustrated! He was beginning to think he’d never get to fish again when Sparkles sat on his shoulder and granted him the gift of patience.  Before he knew it, he had untangled his fishing line all by himself!

And yesterday, she found a girl named Leah who wanted nothing more than to be able to jump rope.  Sparkles touched her hand and gave her the gift of practice. Leah kept trying and trying.  Every time she stepped on the rope she would start over again. Pretty soon she could jump rope without missing!

Today Sparkles was sitting on a leaf outside her home.  She wanted to help a little boy named Shaun who was VERY afraid of thunderstorms.  She had heard crying during a thunderstorm last week and had found Shaun hiding under a blanket, on the couch, in his living room just shaking he was so scared!  Sparkles couldn’t think of anything that she could do at that time to help him but she made a promise to herself that she would help him some how. They were supposed to get another storm today and she still couldn’t think of anything that she could do to help him!

The sky was getting very dark and she could hear thunder off in the distance.   The air was sticky and she was sure this would be a whopper of a storm!  Shaun was at his friends’ house on the other side of her field. Sparkles knew he’d be passing by her home any minute now and that she had better come up with an idea soon!

There he was!  Sparkles stood up on the leaf to watch Shaun as he ran from his friends’ house, past her home in the field, to his house.  She could tell Shaun was already nervous, shaking and near tears.  He was racing to get home before the rain started.  Shaun glanced at the lightning flashing in the clouds and that made him even more afraid!

Sparkles watched Shaun as he ran home. She noticed he was swatting at the air and slapping his arms and legs.  She flew as fast as she could until she caught up with him.  Then she could see the problem.  There were flies everywhere!  They were flying in his face and landing on his arms and legs.  Poor Shaun!  Not only was he afraid of the approaching storm but the flies were biting him!  All this was just too much for Shaun and he started crying as he reached the safety of his home. He ran into the house leaving the toys that he had played with during the day all over the backyard.

Sparkles thought and thought.   She could not think of any gift, that she could grant him, which could help him overcome his fear.  Then she came up with an idea: Maybe she couldn’t help him not to be afraid of thunderstorms – but maybe she could grant him the gift of anticipation.  Maybe if she gave him something to look forward to after the storm he wouldn’t be so afraid!

She flew back to the field and searched until she found the flies.  She gathered some of the neon-green diamonds off of her dress and ground them in her hands until the diamonds turned to magic powder.  Sparkles then flew above the field sprinkling the diamond dust on the flies’ bodies.  Pretty soon the flies were covered in magic neon-green diamond dust.

The storm ascended on to the field and Sparkles flew home to wait.  The lightning bolts shot across the sky fast and furious. The flies flew from plant to plant trying to escape getting wet.  And then it happened; the magic green diamond dust on the flies began to absorb the glow of the lightning!  Pretty soon the field was full of glowing green flies!

When the storm was over and evening was upon them, Shaun came out of his house to gather his toys and put them away. As he walked towards the garage, his arms loaded with toys; Sparkles whispered a thought to him, telling him to look towards her field. He stopped and stared. What a BEAUTIFUL sight he saw!  The flies in the field looked like they had green lights on them and they were every where!  He ran excitedly back into the house to tell his parents about the lightning bugs!

From that day on, Sparkles would sit on the leaf outside her home and wait for Shaun to come outside after each thunderstorm.  She loved seeing the happy look on his face!  And Shaun was less afraid of thunderstorms for he knew that after the rains, if he went outside and looked at the field, he would get to see the beautiful lightning bugs again!
