The Hero Within

Today after a full body scan, my daughter got the news she is cancer free! Her summer was long this year, not the normal playing in the sun and vacationing - but a time of finding her inner strength and seeing a choice made as she put it "to kick the ass of cancer from her!"

What had started almost 10 months ago after a minor car accident and pursuing for more answers to pain in her neck which would not subside, the diagnosis had been made. As her doctor told her the news on her day of diagnosis - the good news is you were in a car accident, the bad news is you have cancer. She took a day to cry, vent, though she never said "why me?" Instead, she said "why not!" And started her new pursuit to choose differently. The pain in her neck continued and she kept fighting.. Using medical assistance, spiritual assistance through healing, prayers and being anointed by an aging priest she sought for in retirement after leaving the parish. She filled her days looking towards being healed, rather than just helped or comforted.

Today, when the news came after a full body scan declaring her cancer free, the tears started flowing and continued for hours. An emotional body which has sustained her and been strong as she found her hero within, now found the space to cleanse the residue of he months before when she exchanged tears for optimism. We never can truly predict the times in our lives when the hero within will be called upon or understand the strength we hold which is greater than thought to be available - though it is there, waiting to come forward, to choose differently and in her months of "why not" along the way she inspired others who observed her strength. Hope was found vicariously through her into many other lives - possibly changing the inner strength of others along the way.

That is the power of the hero strength, selfless and ready to assist whether through observing personal challenges or many acts of valor people of this world do everyday to change the outcome of another in tapping into the hero within! Cancer has millions of heroes, each and every diagnosis - creates another.
