“Do Unto Others”

“Do Unto Others”

Yesterday, thousands lined the streets for the motorcade of Spencer Duncan. A young soldier and specialist who was one of thirty who died recently in Afghanistan, brought home and laid to rest. Along the route, the students of his former junior high and high school were allowed to come outside to the curb and hold flags as he passed. I am not sure anyone who did, will be left unaffected in doing so.

We are largely a planet of caring people. Although the media spotlights those who are not – they are the minority. Life carries a golden rule or “Do unto others as I would do unto you” simply paraphrased. Our world is filled with those we see in greater need and probably would characterize as being the more in need of special acts. The homeless, the abused and the seemingly lost from being embraced and become those who the stories we hold of helping and sharing seem more noticed.

There are also many more that do not fall into this category. People who live alone and rarely here “good Morning/Afternoon” during the course of days or weeks, we see them everyday and without knowing go about our own day, unaware. Children who do not have extended family, and who might only wish an elder who interact and the many each day who long for someone to share a smile with them – yet do not find that smile. Not fitting into the category of need – they reconcile to the faces of this world who do not respond. Treating others the way you wish to be treated, in doing so the small things done in life interacting – hold lasting value for another. I would like to list a few ways I have thought of with the hopes that anyone reading this, could add another and leave it for comment.

1. Take a dozen birthday cards, sign simply happy birthday, and leave them with an agency or senior center to be distributed to those who will not receive a card this year.

2. Find a senior or single person, who is alone and be the secret pal for a year. Remembering the birthday, anniversary and times in life you might take for granted in sharing – and they may not be remembered on.

3. Make a point of smiling at a child and interacting – they are the future of this world and how you treat them now will determine their view of society for the future.

4. Hug somebody for no reason at all.

5. Live without expectations of return on your doing for others.

6. Do not ignore the news in this world you find disturbing – make a point of acknowledging those in situations of despair and make an effort of saying – life can be different – even in the smallest forms of uplifting human nature.

7. Adopt a soldier for a year – Soldiers Angels is a great place to start a connection.

Reaching out is reaching within – treating others as you would like to be treated. Embracing the good and the bad, as a step to embracing better for you as others. Financially - the cost is minimal if at all, uplifting - the price does not hold a limit on return. Energy being expensed is your imprint on life, how is the imprint being created? Look twice today at those who cross your path – the face, need, desire can be seen in the eyes. Good Morning world, create a day or remembrance – Amaste’
